This year, HIW took place on September 21st and was held at the Fantasyland Hotel. The charity of choice was the Alberta Association for Community Living and the Health is Wealth representative was Carl Rodriguez. The many talented musicians within the Medical and Dentistry Faculty provided entertainment. As the first formal of the year, HIW attracted the many students who loved dressing up. One of our plans was to wander from table to table getting pictures of the different people at the tables, unfortunately dinner ended and everyone dispersed - especially after the speech by Dr. Raffath Sayeed, which upon a hundred or so girls disappeared promptly. We did manage to get the teacher table though. Another problem was that some tables didn't want pictures taken, saying they were too boring (their words not mine), or looked odd since they didn't have a girl at the table (they actually phrased it a different way, but it's politically incorrect).
Some highlights included: the guest speaker, Dr. Raffath Sayeed who also happened to also be an active member of the Alberta Association for Community Living, the Jazz band's performance, as well as the dinner music which featured Shauna Hollingshead, a duet with Michael van Manen and Andrew Marks, and Karen Chu. There was also a wonderful duet with Shauna Hollingshead and Stephanie Anderson as well as a sultry vocal solo with Jennifer Minsos (no picture of this here as we headed off to Welcome to the Wards). Andrew Marks put on quite a show as the conductor - I've never seen him so intense and his arms seemed to get a good workout.
Also showing up to HIW were some elusive 3rd years, which I promptly captured on film along with Arun. After this, Thomas and I went off to Welcome to the Wards to look for the even more elusive 4th year, missing out on the majority of the Jazz Band's performance. I heard them during rehearsal when I went to help set up though, and they were amazing then, so I'm sure they were incredible later.
At Welcome to the Wards, we looked around for the 4th years, but of course we didn't know any of them since we'd never seen them in our 1st year. I guess that was pretty stupid of us - looking to photograph ppl even though we had no clue what they looked like. Being the resourceful (or perhaps just lucky) medical students that we were, we found a 2nd year dentist who happened to know the 3rd years who happened to point us in the direction of the 4th years. Yay! So we took some pictures of both the elusive 3rd years and the even rarer 4th years. Since we were still dressed up from Health is Wealth and don't drink, we left early at about 11:15 so we didn't get anyone who came past that time. After that misadventure, we promptly went home and fell asleep.
