Among those who appeared included guest speakers from the CF foundation who talked about their experiences with CF, Dr. Cheeseman, Dr. Yiu with daughter and the mayoral candidates Mike Nickel and Joe Devaney. Because all of the archivists were there, a ton of pictures were taken of the guest speakers (we didn't know about the previous pictures - too busy to communicate), and they had their shoes shined a half dozen times for photo ops - most didn't even switch shoes, they just had it shined and shined and shined On an off note, look for a picture of Vera shining Melinda's shoes in the next Gateway (a Gateway photographer was around). Fatima was also around to take photos for a while, until the camera ran out of space for more photos unfortunately. I think she had fun doing it for a while though, and she can borrow the camera anytime she wants to again.
Highlights of the day included the breakfast, which was manned by various volunteers for 2 or 3 hours as hordes of hungry shiners descended upon them. Other highlights included the various Lister Hall residents singing out cheers and songs which were about as lewd and crude as they come, with many songs involving impossible sexual acts (at least I think they're impossible). Dances by hyperactive Lister hall residents also dominated the day (they even had some odd circle pony dance chant going), especially when Nicole came around with her megaphone and prizes. People were even willing to get their hair spray painted blue to win prizes to show the other halls up, more than for an ill-fitting tee shirt. The police also came to get their shoes shined and their car shined too, although I was too busy doing stamping registrations to get a picture of that. Mix 96 provided the tunes outside at the breakfast.
Shine day lasted from 6am to about 9pm at night, and during the meanwhile the
various volunteers gorged ourselves on free jelly bellies. Unfortunately, it
was about 10 or 12 jelly beans per packet, so we created a landfill's worth
of waste. Besides ruining our teeth, the environment and all of our clothes
(try cleaning the pancake mix garbage can holders or the grease drips under
the grills), we also managed to raise a ton of money.
Melinda did an admirable job of raising money in SUB for about 3 hours, raising
$158 or so, but I think the winner of the most money raised by an individual
raised over $600. All in all, fun was had, jelly beans eaten and money made
- a success in my eyes.
